An SSL certificate is a bit of code on the web server hosting your website that provides security for online communications. When a web browser reaches your secured website, the SSL certificate enables an encrypted connection. It's kind of like sealing a letter in an envelope before sending it through the mail. The SSL certificate makes sure that your website visitors see that your website is secure, and that they will be able to browse your website, make donations, sign-up for mailings, and communicate with you safely.
